The Blue Buffalo brand was originally developed by Bill and Jackie Bishop, owners of a large breed Airedale name Blue, among many other pets.
Throughout previous years, Blue had experienced many health struggles and problems which lead the Bishops to turn their attention to improving his diet. They hoped that a higher quality diet would help to improve his overall health.
The Bishops decided to develop their own brand of dog food that would live up to their high standards of purity. Their efforts resulted in the Blue Buffalo brand which seeks to provide dogs with a food that contains healthy and holistic ingredients.
The Blue Buffalo brand is committed utilizing real ingredients such as fish, chicken, and lamb along with healthy whole grains, fruit, and fresh vegetables.
The Blue Buffalo brand has since developed and trademarked and added an ingredient that they have named LifeSource Bits. These kibble bits are designed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that have increased potency and retain their natural value through a cold forming process.
These help to support and strengthen the immune system as well as helping to maintain a healthy oxidative balance and nutritional support and balance through all different life stages.
Blue Buffalo is also committed to producing high-quality foods without the use of chicken or poultry by-products or artificial flavors, colors or preservatives as well as avoiding soy, wheat, and corn to keep allergy risks at a minimum.
Several years back, Blue Buffalo experienced a voluntary recall of several of their food products due to elevated levels of vitamin D that were believed to be potentially toxic.
Although it seemed that there was an influx of negative reviews during this time about dogs experiencing digestive and health problems, it is not certain that these issues were due to the imbalanced food or simply a coincidence.
Overall, consumers leave reviews the Blue Buffalo brand that is, for the most part, positive and it is considered to be one of the higher quality foods on the market.
Some have shown considerable concern with the brand, particularly due to the recent recall. However, the voluntary nature of the recall has left many believers even more convinced that Blue Buffalo is, in fact, thoroughly committed to only providing a product of the highest quality.
The general opinion seems to be that in light of the voluntary recall, Blue Buffalo does truly care about their product and the health of their consumers more than they do about profit.
Owners who choose to be aware and careful of what they allow into their pet’s diets love the company’s commitment to avoiding the use of soy, wheat, and corn and incorporating only the highest quality ingredients into their wide array of food products.
Despite the generally positive reviews concerning Blue Buffalo, there are customers out there who claim that the products are the cause of sudden health issue in their pets. Unfortunately, there will always be someone who has a bad experience, even with a great quality product and it stands to reason that there is never going to be one product that works for every single consumer.
Most dogs seem to be able to do well on the Blue Buffalo products, either after making a gradual switch or having been on them since puppyhood.
However, in some cases, certain dogs with highly sensitive digestive systems might need a different or more specialized diet and many of these have, unfortunately, experienced some digestive issues while using the Blue Buffalo brand.

Wellness Dog Food
Though the Wellness Dog Food recipes have only been around since the late 1990s, the company has a history that extends back to the early 1900s.
The dog food brand started with simple oven-baked dog biscuits, produced by a small company called Old Mother Hubbard. Previous to Old Mother Hubbard’s official establishment in 1926, the company was a bakery known as A. Hubbard and Sons bakery in the town of Gloucester, Massachusetts.
A. Hubbard and Sons were primarily known for a hard tack sea biscuit that they made and sold to the local sailors. The idea for dog biscuits first originated when a local sailer decided to toss one of his sea biscuits to his dog, who responded by quickly and excitedly gobbling it up.
A. Hubbard and Sons, now Old Mother Hubbard, began making dog biscuits and their distribution eventually spread throughout the entire Northeast.
Several decades later, the company was bought out by Jim Scott, who’s profession centered around the development of safe and nutritious food products for animals. Upon the company’s growth, the headquarters was moved to Lowell, Massachusetts.
As Scott developed the company and sought to further improve the products they offered, they began to reformulate their traditional recipes in an attempt to utilize the highest quality ingredients.
Their gourmet pet snacks and baked dog biscuits soon became treats made from home-style recipes that were 100% natural. This commitment to pure and natural ingredients extended across the entire line of products, and soon their snacks could boast high-quality meats, along with an ideal balance of nutritious fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apples and sweet potatoes.
The pet treat line was now a wonderful and nutritional option for adding into a healthy canine diet.
Begining in the 1990’s the company went through yet another transformation as the company began to work alongside animal nutrition experts as well as scientists and veterinarians in an attempt to develop and introduce a dog food that would force a revolution in the pet food industry.
In 1997, they introduced the dog food Wellness recipes and cat food Wellness recipes followed soon after, in 2000.
Old Mother Hubbard was eventually merged with Eagle Pack Pet Foods and the result was WellPet, a company whose focus is to provide pets with a healthy food source that is made of only whole foods and does not contain artificial flavors or colors, preservatives, wheat, soy or corn.
There have been a couple recalls, both of which occurred back in 2012. Despite those recalls, wellness is still considered to be a highly recommendable dog food brand.
Price aside, Wellness is considered to be a very desirable and high-quality dog food and consumers have rated it very highly. Very few consumers report issues with food allergies and most claim to be very satisfied that their dog’s overall health experiences improvement including improved energy levels as well as a healthier coat.
Wellness also seems to be a favorite amongst pet nutritional experts. Many have rated it as one of the most desirable formulas that pet owners can give to their dogs to achieve optimal canine nutrition. It can be found in many different top ten dog food lists and has received a stamp of approval from the Whole Dog Journal.
Pricing and Availability
Overall, it seems that the main complaint generated from Wellness pet food consumers is that the price is a little high. Despite the required investment, however, Wellness seems to garner a decent level of loyalty from their customers.
Wellness pet foods can be purchased through a wide variety of retailers including PetSmart, PetCo, and Amazon as well as select local pet stores and places like Tractor Supply stores.
Both Blue Buffalo and Wellness dog foods are considered to be among the best dog foods available, however, ratings seem to indicate that Wellness is at least slightly better received than Blue Buffalo. Based on these ratings, it is highly recommended that dog owners try out dog food from the Wellness brand.
Keep in mind that the high price tag on this food brand is a reflection of the quality of the nutrition that it brings to your pet’s diet.
A healthy and high-quality diet is one of the best ways to keep your pet at his best and to minimize the chances of future medical expenses that could possibly stem from health-related issues.
Whole Dog Journal deems this brand to be not only healthy but also a very cost-effective way to keep our dog’s diet balanced and at it’s best.
